Horse Racing | Spring Champion Stakes

Headlining Spring Champion Stakes Day, the Spring Champion Stakes is a Group 1 race for horses aged three-years-old. The event is held at Randwick Racecourse in early October and is one of the biggest and richest races for three-year-olds at the Sydney Spring Racing Carnival. The race itself is run over 2000m and tends to attract some of the best young staying prospects in Australian racing. Gallopers which contest the Spring Champion Stakes usually come from the Group 2 Gloaming Stakes, a $200,000 race held over the slightly shorter distance of 1800m at Rosehill Racecourse a fortnight prior. Many great horses have taken out this event, including It’s A Dundeel, Universal Prince and Kingston Town.

The event was inaugurated in 1971 as a Principal Race, however was elevated straight to Group 1 status in 1979. This race is a perfect lead up to the Group 1 Victoria Derby (2500m) at Flemington during the Melbourne Cup Carnival in late October/early November. The last horse to successfully complete the Spring Champion/Victoria Derby double was New Zealder Monaco Consul in 2009. Other stars of the turf to succeed in the Spring Champion include Tie The Knot (1997), Nothin’ Leica Dane (1995), Kinjite (1991), St Jude (1990), Stylish Century (1989) and Gay Icarus (1971).
