Horse Racing | Spring Stakes

The Spring Stakes is a Group 3 Open Handicap run over a distance of 1600m and has $150,000 in prize money on offer. It is held during the Sydney Spring Racing Carnival and takes place on Cameron Handicap Day. It has been used by some as a stepping stone for the Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes and the Group 1 Epsom Handicap. First conducted as a Listed Race in 1984, it didn’t take long for the Spring Stakes to gain some attention, reaching Group 3 status in 1999.

Some handy gallopers have taken out this event including; Clangalang (2002), Universal Prince (2000), Shogun Lodge (1999), Encounter (1997) and Easter (1985). Sousa (2008), Hotel Grand (2005), Universal Prince (2000), Coronation Day (1992) and Imprimatur (1986) all completed the Spring Stakes/Spring Champion Stakes double.
