Horse Racing | The Nivison

Headlining The Nivison Day, one of the concluding events at the Sydney Spring Racing Carnival, is the Group 3 The Nivison. The race is restricted to mares and is run over sprint distance of 1200m at Randwick Racecourse. Run under set weight and penalty conditions, The Nivison usually attracts horses which don’t really go on and compete at the elite level. Good lead ups to this event include the Group 3 Sheraco Stakes and the Group 3 Research Stakes, both held at Rosehill Racecourse earlier in the carnival.

Plucky Bell, runner up in 2013 The Nivison, went one better a fortnight later winning the Group 3 Maybe Mahal Stakes on Melbourne Cup Day at Flemington. The race was originally listed as the Tarien Quality Handicap, before changing to its current title in 1997. Tarien was a champion mare who won the Warwick Stakes in 1953 and 1954, as well as the George Main Stakes and Craven Plate in 1953.
