THE SHORTS QUICK FACTS

First held in 1867 it is one of the oldest sprint races on the calendar. Originally run over six furlongs (1200m) the race was reduced to the current distance of 1100m in 1972. The race is held under the conditions of set weights plus penalties.

The base weight before penalties are applied is 55kg for entires and geldings and 53kg for mares. 3YO’s receive a 1kg allowance at the base. A principal race from its inception it was upgraded to Listed status in 1979 and in 1994 was lifted to Group 3 level. In 2008 the race was elevated to the current Group 2 status.

Total prizemoney on offer in 2016 will be $200,000 with the winner to receive $120,000. The 2015 winner was the Gary Portelli trained Rebel Dane, ridden by Brenton Avdulla. Other winners of the race include Terravista, Hot Danish, Bentley Biscuit, Moss Rocket and Euclase.

The winner of four of her eight career starts, the Gai Waterhouse/Adrian Bott trained mare is a two time Group 2 winner and a winner at the elite level. In a four race Autumn schedule as a 3YO, the filly resumed in the G2 Challenge Stakes over 1000m at Randwick. Settling near the rear and defying a betting drift she hit the line strongly to land the victory. Second-up into the G1 The Galaxy over 1100m she drew the extreme outside barrier in the 14 horse field and was never in the race, standing them up too big a start. Next start she took on the T J Smith Stakes over 1200m and was a good run in finishing 3rd behind Chautauqua. JAPONISME

4YO gelding Japonisme will be second-up this preparation after resuming in the G3 Concorde Stakes over 1000m where his 6th was the lowest position he has ever finished. It was tough return, lumping 60kg under the set weights and penalties conditions and the last of 9 races on a track rated a heavy 9, certainly made it a testing start to his Spring campaign. After 3 starts in Victoria all in G1 company to start the Autumn where he placed 3rd in both the Lightning and the William Reid, he relished getting back to his own age in the G2 Arrowfield Stud Stakes and was able to land victory. The Waller trained gelding had trialled twice prior to resuming in the Concorde, the second trial a handy effort behind English. His record at 1100m is an impressive 4:3-1-0 while when second-up has a win and a second from three attempts.

CLEARLY INNOCENT

Resuming in this race and facing the biggest test yet, Clearly Innocent has missed a place just once in his nine start career. After finishing 6th in a Class 2 Highway Handicap in December 2015, he then was a half-length 2nd in a similar race two weeks later. Since that run he has gone on to record five straight victories, stepping up in class each time and getting the job done. Included in the streak was victory in the Scone heat of the Country Championships when hitting the line strongly from the rear to take the win. In the Championships Final at Randwick on Doncaster Day and carrying 57.5kg he once again settled near the rear and came with strong burst to run away with a 2.5 length victory. DOTHRAKI

The Snowden trained runner resumes here for his 6YO season and should be seasoned from stepping up to the elite level through his Autumn and Winter preparations for the first time. His Autumn kicked off in the G1 Oakleigh Plate over 1100m, finishing mid-field after jumping from the outside barrier. Next up was a 3rd in the G1 The Galaxy, beaten 1.3 lengths by Griante. His Autumn culminated in a 5th in the G1 T J Smith behind Chautauqua over 1200m. Freshened for the Queensland Winter Carnival he faced the starter twice for a very narrow 2nd in the G1 BTC Cup behind Malaguerra followed by a 5th behind Music Magnate in the Doomben 10,000. Trialling twice to prepare for his return, both have been stylish efforts. THE SHORTS INFORMATION

THE SHORTS INFORMATION

Held each year on George Main Stakes Day, The Shorts is a Group 2 race for horses aged three-years and upwards. The event, run at Randwick Racecourse during the Sydney Spring Carnival in September, is over the 1100m distance and is conducted at set weights and penalties. The sprint tends to attract ultra-competitive fields, however gallopers that contest The Shorts aren’t always the best going around. Fit, in-form horses which have been contesting similar sprints in previous weeks over 1100m or 1200m are suited here, and races such as the Group 3 Concorde Stakes tend to be a good guide.

In 2013, the John O’Shea trained Sessions finished second in the Concorde Stakes before going one better in The Shorts a fortnight later. In 2014, Terravista won the Group 3 Show County Quality before successfully backing up in the Shorts. He also won the Group 1 VRC Sprint Classic (1200m) at Flemington later in the spring.
