Total prize money on offer in 2017 is $500,000 with the winner to receive $320,000. This year's favorite at starting odds of $3.20 is In Her Time (21/06). The 2016 winner was the Kelly Schweida trained Miss Cover Girl, paying win odds of $16.00. Other past winners include Srikandi, Pear Tart, Red Tracer and Dane Ripper. Grahame Begg is the only trainer to have prepared the winner for successive victories, saddling Bonanova to success in 1999 and 2000. UBET checked in with expert tipster Chris Nelson for a closer look at the form runners in races 1-8 at this Saturday's Tattersall's Tiara at Doomben.
3YO fillies have won 5 of 10 editions of the Tatts Tiara since it became a Group 1. NSW trainer Kurt Goldman has been very selective in placing the 3YO daughter of I Am Invincible which has seen the filly record wins in 5 of her 10 race starts. Following successive wins during the Sydney Spring, she was given a 42 day gap between winning a benchmark 70 at Rosehill and then taking out the Listed Mode Plate at Eagle Farm. Another win followed at Gold Coast over 1200m before finishing a late closing half-length 3rd to Flying Jess in the Magic Millions Guineas. Given a break she resumed in the Listed Denise’s Joy at Scone and was too far back in the run but did hit the line nicely. The filly then took victory in the G3 Glenlogan Park at Eagle Farm with Corey Brown riding and the star hoop partners the filly once again.
A pronounced favourite with the UBET book when the All-In market was open, the 4YO mare was dealt a blow when coming up with a wide gate of barrier 16 for the Tatts Tiara. Trainer Ben Smith had the mare resuming in the Doomben 10,000 and working across from gate 11, she settled close to the speed and battled on well to be 3 lengths from the winner Redzel. 2nd up in the Stradbroke with 53.5kg, she was never closer than 3 wide throughout and with 150m to go it looked that she might just be packing enough guns to hold on. It was only the late charge of Impending that she couldn’t withstand, being grabbed near the line in finishing a long neck off the win in 2nd place. While she has won on soft going, Smith will be looking for a good track as she looks to secure a maiden G1 triumph.
The member of the powerful Hayes/Dabernig stable has found a peak at the right time. Resuming in a benchmark 90 over 1200m at Caulfield in April, she found the line nicely to score by three quarters of a length. That earned the mare a trip to South Australia for the UBET Classic where she didn’t get the greatest luck in transit after drawing the middle of the line. Given a shot in the G3 Proud Miss again over the 6 furlong trip at Morphettville, the mare found the line strongly to get within one length of the winner Fuhryk. Arriving in Queensland she was well placed on the minimum in the Listed Hinkler and was able to stick her neck out in time to score over the 1200m. The extra trip should be no concern and the 4YO mare will be looking to make it a three-peat of victories in the Tiara for her age bracket.
Trained by Kris Lees, the Newcastle based conditioner has already produced two Group 1 winners for the carnival. He saddles the Dane Shadow mare Danish Twist for the last G1 of the season and the mare looks to be into the race at some value. The mare started 5 times through the Sydney Carnival, two of those at the elite level when a neck 3rd to Heavens Above in the Coolmore and a down the track effort in the Queen Of The Turf behind Foxplay. Given a freshen following that performance she trialled twice through May before lining up at Rosehill off a 56 day break over the 1400m when carrying 59kg in the Octagonal Handicap . Settling near the rear she found the line nicely despite being 2.5 lengths off the winner Royal Tudor. Her only career start at Doomben was a victory over this trip and Koby Jennings takes the ride.
The last Group 1 race of the QWRC and also the Australian Season, the Tatterall's Tiara is a 1350m event restricted to fillies and mares held at weight-for-age. The Tattersall's Tiara is officially registered as the Tatts Winter Stakes and was first run in 1996 at Group 3 level and was first conducted at the elite level in 2007. The race will be held at Doomben on June 24.
The day is one of the official Tattersalls Days with other races on the card including the Listed Winning Edge Stakes, the Crystal Slipper that has recently been upgraded, the Group 3 WJ Healy Stakes and the Group 3 Tattersall's Cup run over 2200m.
