In Bart we trust! The Darren Weir trained cult her returns for a Winter campaign and will be first-up since annexing the 1400m double in the Autumn of the G1 CF Orr and the G1 Futurity, both at Caulfield. This will be his third Goodwood appearance, having competed in 2015 when still trained out of WA by Vaughn Sigley. That year her returned a 4th to Flamberge and returned to tackle the 2016 edition under the guidance of Weir. Finishing strongly last year he was able to arrive with a perfectly timed run. Weir has prepared Black Heart Bart for the past 13 starts and in that time his record is 13: 6-6-0, the only miss coming when stepped out to 2040m for the Cox Plate. The record includes five G1 victories and $2.4m in stakes. His record at 1200m is 8:4-3-0 and is a three-time winner first-up.
4YO mare Secret Agenda will look to add her name alongside Black Caviar in securing the two G1 1200m events of the Adelaide carnival of the Sangster (UBET Classic) and The Goodwood. Damien Oliver stays up on the mare after a bold front-running ride in the UBET Classic where he jumped well and pressed forward from gate 16 in the 20 horse field to take up the running. Leading for home as they flattened, Olly stole it and was able to hold on for a near two length victory. That win followed success in the G2 Sapphire Stakes at Randwick over 1200m where she settled close to the speed and finished best to score a 1.5 length win. Trained by Mick Price the mare is a four-time winner at 1200m and moves closer to the rails here by jumping from gate 5. Her only other start at Morphettville was a 1.5 length 4th to Faatinah in the Euclase Stakes last year.
Trainer Peter Gelagotis knows what it takes to beat Black Heart Bart and it was his star sprinter Malaguerra that was the last horse to defeat BHB. Both were resuming in the G2 Australia Stakes at Moonee Valley and from barrier 9, Malaguerra was settled close to the speed and then was too slick in forging clear to a two length victory. They met at the 1400m of the CF Orr Stakes at their next start with Black Heart Bart turning the tables. Gelagotis then dropped him back to six furlongs for the TJ Smith and he didn’t handle the heavy track at Randwick. This will be the 5YO’s first visit to Morphettville with his record at the distance showing 10: 6-1-0. Ben Melham rides the gelding and a victory would see the talented hoop score his 3rd Goodwood success in the past five editions on the two-time 1200m G1 winner.
West Australian Simon Miller brings the 5YO gelding First Among Equals to Adelaide and has been dealt a blow after landing the car-park in barrier 16. The Exceed And Excel gelding will be second-up after resuming in the Listed Northam Stakes at 1100m. Settling close to the speed, the gelding was able to claim his rivals in a slick closing 600m sectional. During April and June of his 3YO term he was unstoppable in the West, scoring six consecutive victories. Other victories that followed that stretch were in the Listed Pinjarra Classic over 1300m and successive wins at Belmont in the Listed Bolton Sprint and the Belmont Newmarket. He was given his chance in the G1 Winterbottom and jumping from barrier 9 was able to finish one length from Takedown to hold 4th position. A five time winner at 1200m his second-up record is 4: 2-1-1.
The Goodwood is the final Group 1 in the Adelaide Carnival and is run over 1200m at the Morphettville course. For horses 3 years old and older the conditions of the race are set weights plus penalties, with the 2016 set weights being 4YO and older entires & geldings 54.5kg, 3YO colts & geldings 53.0kg, mares 4YO and over 52.5kg and 3YO fillies 51.0kg.
Ballot exemptions were offered to the first 3 placegetters in the UBET Classic, the first 2 placegetters in the UBET Stakes and the first 2 placegetters in the DC McKay Stakes.
The race was a handicap and known as the Goodwood Handicap, before it was changed to a set weights and penalties event in 2007, making it the only race on the Australian G1 calendar held under those conditions for open gallopers. The 2016 edition offers total prizemoney of $1,000,000 with the winner to receive $640,000. Past winners of the race include Black Caviar, Takeover Target, Bomber Bill, Keeper and Euclase. The 2016 winner was the Darren Weir trained Black Heart Bart, ridden by Brad Rawiller.
